Javier Milei reaffirms Falkland Islands sovereignty claim at UN
During his visit to New York for the UN General Assembly, Argentine President Javier Milei reaffirmed Argentina's sovereignty claims over the Falkland Islands. He called on the United Kingdom to resume negotiations and criticized the United Nations as an 'useless organization' for failing to address the dispute effectively.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Milei addressed the future of the islanders, stating they would not be expelled and would be treated with 'dignity and justice' if sovereignty were recovered. He argued that the current population is not indigenous, as the original population was displaced by Britain.
Milei also used his platform to invite global investment in sectors like Vaca Muerta, while explicitly warning that companies involved in the illegal exploitation of resources in the Falkland Islands would be excluded.
In response to the diplomatic escalation, British opposition politician Tom Tugendhat accused China of providing financial backing to the Argentine government to support its territorial claims, citing the existing currency swap agreement between the two nations.
