Javier Milei suspends UK visit amid Falkland Islands sovereignty dispute
Argentine President Javier Milei has suspended his planned visit to the United Kingdom, originally scheduled for late October, amid escalating diplomatic tensions over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas). The trip, which was intended to include a lecture at Oxford University and meetings with business leaders to promote investment, was canceled following a series of assertive moves by the Argentine government.
Argentina has initiated legal and sanctioning processes against approximately 60 companies and individuals accused of operating in the Malvinas basin without authorization. This includes criminal complaints against firms involved in the Sea Lion oil project, such as Navitas Petroleum and Rockhopper Exploration. To provide a legal framework for these actions, the Argentine Executive has sent the National Sovereignty Defense Law to Congress, aimed at penalizing illegal resource exploitation.
Additionally, the government announced plans to establish an Integrated Naval Base in Tierra del Fuego. While the UK has responded by reaffirming its commitment to the islanders' right to self-determination, Milei intends to prioritize the sovereignty claim during his upcoming address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
