Brazil downgrades diplomatic ties with Argentina amid Milei's insults

Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced a downgrade of diplomatic relations with Argentina to the level of chargé d’affaires. The Brazilian ambassador in Buenos Aires, Julio Bitelli, was recalled and will not return, while Brazil asked Argentine ambassador Daniel Raimondi to leave Brazil. The move was a response to Argentine President Javier Milei’s repeated attacks on Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, calling him a “thief”, “corrupt” and an “ex‑convict”. Argentina’s foreign minister Pablo Quirno said Buenos Aires will not retaliate or break relations. The downgrade reduces political dialogue but leaves consular services and routine diplomatic functions intact. The tension escalates weeks before Brazil’s presidential election in October 2026, adding a diplomatic dimension to the electoral contest.
