Brazil pulls ambassador, cuts ties with Argentina over Milei‑Lula spat FAST-MOVING

Argentine President Javier Milei repeatedly insulted Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, calling him a “thief”, “corrupt” and a “presidiary”. Milei also said he hoped “Brazil also paints blue”, referring to a possible victory for Flávio Bolsonaro.

In response, Brazil’s foreign ministry, led by Minister Mauro Vieira, announced that ambassador Julio Bitelli would not return to Buenos Aires and that the Brazilian mission would be reduced to a chargé‑d’affaires level. The Argentine ambassador Daniel Raimondi was summoned for explanations.

Uruguay’s foreign minister Mario Lubetkin said Uruguay will not act as a mediator in the dispute, stressing the need to preserve Mercosur stability and warning that the tension could affect ongoing Mercosur negotiations with the EU, EFTA and Asian partners.
