Javier Oropeza detained in Venezuela after returning from exile
Javier Oropeza, the former mayor of Torres municipality, was detained by Venezuelan security forces in Barquisimeto, Lara state, on Thursday, September 17, 2026. The arrest occurred as Oropeza was leaving an interview at the newspaper El Informador. The detention took place only two days after his return to Venezuela following a two-year exile in Spain.
Opposition leaders, including María Corina Machado and Juan Pablo Guanipa, condemned the arrest as an arbitrary kidnapping and a form of political persecution. They noted that Oropeza had obtained a dismissal of his legal case just one day prior to his detention. The incident coincided with the start of the second round of political dialogue between the government and the opposition delegation led by Dinorah Figuera.
Following the arrest, protesters blocked the Autopista Centrooccidental near Carora to demand his release. After several hours of tension and political pressure, reports indicated that Oropeza was released on the night of Thursday, September 17.
