Bernardo Silva joins Real Madrid, praises Mourinho and club in first training
Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva completed a free transfer from Manchester City to Real Madrid after his contract expired. On 3 August 2026 he passed a medical examination at the Sanitas centre in Valdebebas and immediately took part in his first training session under head coach José Mourinho.
Silva described the club as “the best club in the history of football” and said “the history speaks for itself”. He expressed great happiness to be in Madrid, called the Bernabéu a “home”, and pledged to help the team continue its winning tradition. He also praised Mourinho as a coach who “means a lot for Portuguese football”. In interviews he named former greats such as Zinedine Zidane, Rui Costa and Luka Modrić as personal references.
