Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority secures $70 million IFC loan for shore power
The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has agreed to provide a $70 million loan to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) to fund shore power supply (SPS) infrastructure across its terminals. This transaction marks the first blue financing for port infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region and the first development finance institution investment in India’s state-owned major ports.
The SPS infrastructure will allow ships at berth to switch off diesel engines and connect to land-based electricity. This technology is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 63% and air pollution by up to 90%, while creating more than 400 jobs.
As no major Indian port has yet deployed shore power technology at a commercial scale, the project aims to serve as a model for other Indian ports and emerging markets. The initiative aligns with the Maritime India Vision 2030 and the Harit Sagar Green Port Guidelines to promote cleaner maritime technologies.
