Jawaharlal Nehru University allowed to resume PG admissions
The Delhi High Court has modified a previous order to allow Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to proceed with postgraduate admissions using its 'deprivation points' system. An earlier interim order by a single-judge bench had halted the process, with Justice Jasmeet Singh observing that the policy appeared to alter the sanctity of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) by adding marks to students' scores based on their geographical background.
The deprivation points policy, which has been in use at JNU since 1974, awards up to 12 points—each equivalent to three marks—to candidates based on the location of their prior schooling. This could grant a candidate up to 36 additional marks. While the court has now allowed admissions to continue to prevent the entire process from stalling, the final legality of the policy remains subject to the outcome of a pending petition.
