Jawaharlal Nehru University faces allegations of PhD seat reservation shortfall

CPI(M) Lok Sabha MP K Radhakrishnan has requested urgent intervention from Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi regarding an alleged shortfall in reserved seats for PhD admissions at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for the 2026-27 academic year.

According to a letter sent by Radhakrishnan, the university prospectus reportedly fails to meet constitutional reservation quotas for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) candidates. The MP alleges a total shortfall of 38 seats: 15 for ST candidates, four for SC candidates, and 19 for PwBD candidates.

The Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students’ Association (BAPSA) has been conducting an indefinite sit-in protest at the university since October 24, citing irregularities in the seat allocation process.
