Delhi High Court examines CBSE stance on calculator use in exams
The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the Union Ministry of Education, and other educational bodies regarding a public interest litigation (PIL) that seeks to allow Class XII students to use basic, non-programmable calculators during board examinations.
The petition specifically requests permission for calculators in Accountancy exams, with a potential extension to Mathematics following an expert review. While the petitioners claim the CBSE Curriculum Committee previously approved such a proposal, the Board noted that any decision would require formal recommendations from an expert committee to address logistical aspects and the impact across its 204 subjects. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on January 27, 2027.
