Jawhara Hassan named among World Food Forum’s 100 inspiring women

Yemeni farmer Jawhara Hassan has been named by the World Food Forum as one of the ‘100 Inspiring Women in Food and Agriculture Systems’ globally. Based in the Bir Fadl area of Aden, Hassan’s recognition follows her efforts to transform approximately 29,000 square meters of arid land into a productive farm starting in 2017.

Hassan’s agricultural work includes sesame cultivation and oil extraction, utilizing sustainable production methods to link traditional farming with modern markets. Her project has also provided employment and training for 18 displaced women from Al Hudaydah and dozens of others, fostering economic independence.

The Yemeni Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Fisheries, led by Minister Salem Al-Soktri, nominated Hassan as part of a group of 600 candidates from 131 countries. The ministry highlighted the importance of empowering rural and coastal women to increase production and address food security gaps in a country where 60% of the population resides in rural areas.
