Jay Clayton advanced by Senate Intelligence Committee for DNI nomination

The Senate Intelligence Committee voted 9‑8 along party lines to move former U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton’s nomination for Director of National Intelligence to the full Senate floor. Committee Chairman Sen. Tom Cotton praised Clayton’s experience, while Democratic members expressed opposition after Clayton avoided directly stating that President Joe Biden won the 2020 election, describing the result only as “certified.”

Senator Mark Warner, who previously worked closely with Clayton, announced he would vote against the nominee, citing the hearing performance despite expecting the nomination to pass given the Republican‑controlled Senate. The nomination follows a turbulent earlier attempt by President Trump to name Bill Pulte, an acting director with no national‑security background, which had stalled the reauthorization of the Section 702 surveillance authority.

Clayton, a former SEC chairman, remains the Trump administration’s choice to lead the intelligence community amid partisan scrutiny of the 2020 election narrative.
