Jay Clayton slated for US intelligence director hearing on July 15

President Donald Trump has nominated former SEC chairman and Manhattan U.S. attorney Jay Clayton to serve as the next Director of National Intelligence. The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence has scheduled a confirmation hearing for July 15.

The nomination follows criticism of Trump’s temporary appointment of Federal Housing Finance Agency director Bill Pulte, who lacks national‑security experience, and comes amid Democratic demands that the acting DNI be removed before they support the renewal of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Senate leaders say they will move quickly on the hearing, while Democrats tie their cooperation on the surveillance‑law deadline to the removal of the interim official. The nomination also arrives as Trump pushes the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act and other election‑related legislation.

Clayton’s record as a U.S. attorney in the Southern District of New York, where he handled financial fraud, public‑corruption and national‑security cases, will be scrutinized during the confirmation process.
