Jay-Z explores his musical legacy in new HBO docuseries

The new HBO docuseries ‘Jay-Z in 8’ features rapper Jay-Z in conversation with producer Rick Rubin, analyzing over 25 tracks from his 30-year career. The series, which began airing on September 18, explores his creative process, his upbringing, and the cultural impact of his music.

In the series, Jay-Z shares personal reflections, including his initial lack of interest in being a performing artist and his desire to become a mogul instead. He also provides new insights into hip-hop history, such as the deteriorating relationship between The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur. Jay-Z recalled how Biggie attempted to warn Tupac about certain individuals, a warning that inadvertently created further tension.

Other highlights from the episodes include Jay-Z’s memories of the transition of Hot 97 radio toward rap programming and his discussion regarding the rollout of ‘The Black Album’. Additionally, he addressed his relationship with DJ Funkmaster Flex, who jokingly reacted to being referred to as a ‘local DJ’ during a discussion about the 2003 album's single selection.
