Jay-Z reveals he nearly quit rap after debut album
Hip-hop artist Jay-Z revealed that he seriously considered leaving the music industry following the release of his 1996 debut album, ‘Reasonable Doubt’. During a conversation with Rick Rubin for the HBO Max docuseries and podcast ‘JAY-Z In 8’, the rapper explained that the lifestyle associated with being a recording artist did not appeal to him.
Jay-Z noted that the perceived status of many rappers at the time felt like a step backward compared to his existing lifestyle, citing differences in the vehicles used by artists. Beyond the image, he admitted to disliking the public-facing aspects of the profession, such as conducting interviews, speaking publicly, and filming music videos.
Rather than pursuing a career as a performer, he initially considered following an executive path similar to music mogul Russell Simmons. Ultimately, he continued his music career while simultaneously building a significant business portfolio.
