Jayapura Port unrest causes damage and injuries
A riot occurred at Jayapura Port in Papua on Tuesday night, September 15, 2026, after a fight broke out aboard the vessel KM Gunung Dempo. According to Jayapura Police Chief Kombes Pol Fredrickus Maclarimboen, news of the altercation reached friends and relatives of the victim on land, prompting a crowd to storm the port in an attempt at retaliation.
Participants in the unrest reportedly used wood and iron to damage port gates and fences, and threw objects toward the vessel. The chaos delayed the docking of KM Gunung Dempo, which was originally scheduled for 10:00 PM WIT but did not successfully berth until approximately 6:00 AM WIT on Wednesday.
Two people were reported injured during the incident: one individual at the port area struck by a thrown stone, and another person injured aboard the ship.
