Jayapura protests turn violent in Waena clashes

Clashes erupted in Waena, Jayapura, on Saturday, August 15, 2026, as thousands of students and youth members gathered to protest military deployment in Papua and commemorate the New York Agreement of 1962.

Demonstrations organized by the West Papua National Committee (KNPB) and student alliances began in several locations, including Abepura, Expo Waena, and Perumnas III. While some areas remained peaceful, violent confrontations occurred in Waena when protesters attempted a long march toward Abepura but were blocked by security forces. The situation escalated into physical shoving and stone-throwing, prompting police to deploy tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowds.

The unrest resulted in injuries to both sides. Seven police officers were reported injured with bruises and lacerations, and were treated at Bhayangkara Jayapura Hospital. Protesters also sustained injuries during the dispersal efforts. Activists, including Arius Siep, expressed concerns that increased military presence and land exploitation threaten the rights and sovereignty of indigenous Papuans.
