Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is at the center of a widespread controversy following a legal dispute with his former university, LSU. Daniels’ representatives issued a cease-and-desist letter to the school, demanding that LSU refrain from using his name, image, and likeness (NIL). The dispute stems from LSU’s decision to assign Daniels’ former jersey number, No. 5, to sophomore defensive back DJ Pickett.

While the number was not formally retired, Daniels’ camp expressed that the decision felt “profoundly disrespected” given his Heisman Trophy-winning legacy at the school. LSU officials noted that the number had been promised to Pickett during the recruiting process.
