JB Pritzker seeks direct tariff refunds for Illinois families

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has written to President Donald Trump requesting direct tariff refunds for Illinois families. Following the U.S. Treasury's payout of $100 billion in tariff refunds to corporations, Pritzker is seeking $1,700 direct payments for residents to offset costs incurred from previously unconstitutionally collected tariffs.

The request follows a Supreme Court ruling that struck down the use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to unilaterally impose tariffs. While major corporations such as Apple, Amazon, and Walmart have received or are owed billions in refunds, Pritzker noted there is currently no mechanism to ensure these funds are passed back to consumers. He has encouraged support for the Tariff Relief for Consumers Act, which would require companies to lower prices on affected household goods upon receiving refunds.
