JBS unit Zempack develops long-life seafood packaging
Zempack, a metal packaging unit of JBS, has developed a specialized can designed to preserve oysters and other seafood in oil. This technology allows cooked oysters to maintain a shelf life of up to two years without the need for freezing.
Developed over 18 months as part of the Amuse Bouche SC project in Florianópolis, the innovation aims to overcome logistical barriers in the seafood industry, such as the requirement for refrigerated distribution chains. By extending the shelf life from a few days for fresh oysters to two years, the packaging facilitates shipping to distant markets and reduces dependence on frozen storage.
