Újbuda deputy mayor hospitalized after assault during drug raid

Máté Kreitler-Sas, the deputy mayor of Újbuda, was hospitalized and required surgery after being injured during a police intervention. While performing civil guard duties on Bartók Béla Street, the deputy mayor attempted to restrain a man who had knocked a police officer down a flight of stairs while attempting to flee.

The incident began following a report that a man was refusing to let a woman leave an apartment. Upon arrival, officers noted a strong smell of marijuana. During the subsequent search, authorities discovered over one kilogram of marijuana, several grams of cocaine, scales, hundreds of plastic bags, and millions of forints in cash. The suspect tested positive for THC and cocaine.

Despite the scale of the drug seizure and the physical altercation, the suspect was released within 72 hours. The prosecution stated that the legal requirements for detention were not met, though preventive supervision was ordered. The incident has drawn criticism from public figures, including fashion designer Zoltán Herczeg, who questioned the disparity between this case and previous drug-related detentions.
