JCPenney continues nationwide store closures
JCPenney is continuing to reduce its nationwide footprint through a series of store closures across the United States. A notable recent closure occurred at the Stoneridge Shopping Center in Pleasanton, California, where the retailer had operated since the 1980s. A company spokesperson stated that the closure resulted from an inability to reach suitable lease renewal terms.
The contraction is part of a broader trend for the retailer. Recent closures have also been reported in Florida, Illinois, Tennessee, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. JCPenney’s store count has seen a significant decline over the decades; from a peak of over 2,000 locations in the 1970s, the number fell to 846 in 2020 and has now dwindled to approximately 640 locations.
