JD Sports faces critical trading update amid market shifts

JD Sports is approaching a critical second-quarter trading update as investors seek confirmation of CEO Regis Schultz’s turnaround strategy. The retailer faces challenges including weakening consumer spending, a slowing sportswear market, and recent leadership instability following the resignation of former chairman Andy Higginson. While shares have recovered nearly 10% since the start of the year, the company has previously warned that annual pre-tax profits may fall from last year’s £852 million to a range of £750 million to £850 million.

In recent financial performance, JD Sports reported a significant revenue increase to £12.7 billion, driven largely by the $1.1 billion acquisition of US-based retailer Hibbett. This acquisition is expected to increase the North American share of group sales from approximately 32% to 40%. Although operating profit saw a slight decline, strong free cash flow and a £200 million share buyback have helped stabilize investor confidence. Analysts are now monitoring how demand from the company’s younger, lower-income customer base holds up against rising household costs and broader market shifts.
