JD Vance affirms commitment to Alaska LNG project despite South Korean uncertainty

U.S. Vice President JD Vance has reaffirmed the Trump administration's commitment to completing the Alaska Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) development project, despite acknowledging uncertainties regarding South Korean investment. In an interview with Alaska News Source, Vance noted that while there appear to be ‘political dynamics’ in South Korea affecting the project, the administration intends to move forward regardless of whether it involves the current or future South Korean government, or requires cooperation with Japan and other nations.

Vance emphasized that Alaskan gas is higher quality, more reliable, and cheaper than gas from ‘certain minor dictatorial regimes.’ This stance follows President Trump’s previous announcement that South Korea would invest over $50 billion in the project. However, the South Korean government has maintained that such an investment has not been finalized, stating only that the project is under review.

Senator Dan Sullivan added that while negotiations regarding the business structure are ongoing, a key difference in the current environment is that funding has been secured and the project has the full support of the federal government. The push for the project comes amid a competitive Senate race in Alaska, where recent polls show a close contest between Sullivan and Democratic challenger Mary Peltola.
