Senator Eric Schmitt faces scrutiny after failed Senate questioning

Missouri Senator Eric Schmitt, who has been identified as a leading contender for a potential 2028 running mate to JD Vance, faced significant scrutiny following a failed questioning attempt during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.

Schmitt attempted to corner former Special Counsel Jack Smith by accusing him of perjury. Schmitt claimed to have text messages indicating Smith was in Atlanta attending an NBA game between the Atlanta Hawks and the Golden State Warriors on February 3, 2024, suggesting a meeting with Fulton County District Attorney Fani T. Willis. However, Smith denied being at an Atlanta Hawks game, explaining that he had actually attended a women’s college basketball game at the University of Maryland featuring the Iowa Hawkeyes.

The incident occurred shortly after reports emerged that Schmitt is a top prospect for Vance’s future ticket. While Marco Rubio has been mentioned as a potential vice presidential pick, he has expressed focus on his roles as secretary of state and national security adviser.
