JD Vance praises Netflix series ‘Emily in Paris’ as cultural criticism
US Vice President JD Vance has expressed unexpected praise for the Netflix romantic comedy series ‘Emily in Paris’, describing it as a ‘masterwork of American television’. In videos shared on TikTok and Instagram, Vance offered what he termed a ‘meta analysis’ of the show, suggesting it serves as a ‘massive cultural criticism of millennial decision-making’.
Vance argued that the protagonist’s series of ‘absurd’ and ‘atrocious decisions’ regarding her romantic life and career provide significant cultural commentary. He specifically noted that the character should ideally marry the French chef to build a life together, rather than focusing on her job or pursuing random relationships. He concluded by stating, ‘It is, at the risk of overstating it, the Shakespeare of our time.’
The series, created by Darren Star and starring Lily Collins, follows an American marketing executive working in the fashion industry in Paris. Some observers have speculated that Vance’s commentary may be an attempt to connect with younger female voters ahead of future political cycles.
