JD Vance questioned by Catholic sister over ICE immigration tactics
During a town hall event in suburban Detroit, Vice President JD Vance was confronted by Sister Nancy Sylvester regarding the conduct of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and its impact on immigrant families.
Sister Sylvester, a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, described the trauma witnessed by her order while ministering at the U.S. southern border and in Detroit. She specifically highlighted the distress of children separated from parents and questioned how the behavior of ICE officers could be justified in light of Gospel values. She further asked what policies the Vice President would advocate to promote more compassionate treatment of immigrants.
Vance, who is Catholic, responded by stating that the federal government is attempting to “strike a balance” between law enforcement requirements and humane treatment. He described most ICE agents as “patriots” who aim to protect the country, while acknowledging that mistakes have been made and that those who “screw up” should be held accountable.
