JD Vance questions benefits of US dollar reserve status

US Vice President JD Vance has publicly questioned the benefits of the US dollar’s status as a reserve currency, describing it as a “resource curse” similar to coal in Appalachia.

Vance argued that while reserve status allows for cheaper debt and benefits consumers through lower prices, it acts as a “massive tax on American producers.” He suggested that the strength of the dollar, supported by global financing of the US budget deficit, creates challenges for the domestic manufacturing sector. The administration appears to favor a weaker dollar to support industrial growth.

In a related move on July 31, the US Treasury entered the currency market to purchase Japanese yen.
