JD Vance seeks verifiable nuclear commitments from Iran

US Vice President JD Vance stated that Washington is seeking a ‘long-term and verifiable commitment’ from Iran to ensure the country does not rebuild its nuclear program. During a CBS News Q&A in Michigan, Vance emphasized that the primary concern is whether Iran could rebuild its nuclear capabilities or restore enrichment capacities within the next five years.

Vance noted that a significant reduction in enrichment capacity is a necessary condition for any potential agreement. This follows previous statements from US officials regarding Iran's 60% enriched uranium stockpiles. While Donald Trump has previously claimed that the US has ‘taken the nuclear weapon away from Iran,’ Vance clarified that the objective is to secure guarantees that prevent future reconstruction of such capabilities.

In a separate context, Vance attributed rising fuel prices to the Islamic Republic's interference with commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, suggesting costs would be three times lower without a US naval presence. This aligns with remarks from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who previously stated that Iran has lost full control of the Strait of Hormuz.
