EU warns China of trade defense measures over record deficit
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has warned that the European Union is prepared to deploy its full range of trade defense mechanisms if ongoing negotiations with Beijing fail to resolve a record-high trade imbalance. The EU's trade deficit with China has reached approximately 1 billion euros per day, a situation where all 27 member states currently record a deficit.
Von der Leyen noted that the volume of Chinese imports into the EU has surged by 45% over the past five years. In response, the Commission has launched 30 trade defense investigations in the last year alone, nearly triple the historical average. The EU is also facing significant strategic vulnerabilities, with dependence on China exceeding 80% for certain essential inputs and reaching 90% for specific rare earths.
The European Commission has established October as the deadline for reaching a trade agreement with Beijing to rebalance these relations. While the EU maintains that dialogue is essential, officials emphasize that the bloc must be ready to act if negotiations do not yield tangible results to protect European industry and economic interests.
