Jean Andrés Pumarol faces trial for fatal stabbing in Santo Domingo
The First Collegiate Court of the National District is scheduled to begin a substantive trial on Tuesday, October 13, against Jean Andrés Pumarol Fernández. Pumarol is accused of killing Yolanda Handal Abugabir and wounding five other individuals during a knife attack at a residential complex in the Naco district of Santo Domingo.
The trial follows a decision by the Second Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeals to revoke a previous ‘no ha lugar’ ruling that had favored the defendant. The appellate court ruled that the prosecution provided sufficient evidence to justify a trial, acting on appeals from the Public Ministry and the victim's family, who are participating as plaintiffs.
Pumarol Fernández faces charges including homicide and attempted homicide, as well as violations related to weapons and animal protection laws. He is currently serving three months of preventive detention at the Anamuya Correction and Rehabilitation Center in Higüey.
