Jean-Baptiste M. sentenced to 30 years for rape and murder of 10-year-old
The Ardennes Assize Court has sentenced 60-year-old Jean-Baptiste M. to 30 years of criminal imprisonment for the rape and murder of 10-year-old Loana in Sedan in 2023. The sentence includes a mandatory minimum safety period of two-thirds of the term.
The defendant, who showed little emotion upon hearing the verdict, had only minimally acknowledged the facts during the trial. While the prosecution had requested a life sentence without the possibility of early release, the court opted for the 30-year term.
Loana's aunt, Peggy Creton, expressed relief at the decision, stating she hoped the family could now “resume an almost normal life,” though she noted the lack of full answers from the defendant. Legal representatives for the civil parties described the sentence as feeling “just,” noting that the safety period provides reassurance that the perpetrator will likely remain incarcerated for the rest of his life.
