Jean Dalibard awarded the Alessandro Volta Prize for quantum physics research
French physicist Jean Dalibard has been awarded the 2025 Alessandro Volta Prize in Como, Italy. Dalibard, a professor at the Collège de France, was recognized for his pioneering research in laser cooling and quantum physics.
His work involves using light to slow down atoms to temperatures near absolute zero. This research provides a foundation for future quantum technologies, including quantum simulators, advanced quantum computing for drug and material design, next-generation atomic clocks for satellite navigation, and quantum sensors for medical diagnostics and geophysical monitoring.
The award ceremony featured commendations from Nobel Prize winners in Physics Alain Aspect and William D. Phillips. The prize is established by the European Physical Society (EPS) in partnership with the energy company Acinque.
