Jean-Michel Baylet assaulted in Valence d’Agen

Jean-Michel Baylet, the 79-year-old mayor of Valence d’Agen and former French minister, was assaulted on Saturday evening after intervening to request that loud music be turned down. The incident occurred in the Rue Chevalier-Toile area, where Baylet reported being shoved, punched in the chest, and spat upon by a man.

A Bulgarian couple, a 42-year-old man and his 39-year-old wife, were taken into custody following the altercation. The Montauban prosecutor's office has announced that the couple is scheduled to appear before the Montauban court on February 9 for “violence against an elected official.”

Baylet was prescribed four days of total incapacity for work (ITT). In public statements, the mayor expressed his determination to continue his duties as a guarantor of public order, while also commenting on the integration challenges regarding certain foreign residents in his municipality.
