Jean-Michel Jarre's Oxygène marks 50 years of electronic music influence
Jean-Michel Jarre’s landmark electronic album, Oxygène, approaches its 50th anniversary. Originally released in France in 1976 and brought to the international market the following year, the album is credited with helping transition electronic music from experimental niches to a massive global audience. Official figures from Jarre’s website cite sales of more than 18 million copies.
Jarre recorded the original work in his Parisian apartment using a minimalist setup of synthesizers, pedals, and a recorder. Despite technological limitations and partially broken equipment, the album achieved significant commercial and artistic success. Jarre has recently experienced a career resurgence with his Electronica projects, which led to a UK Top 10 appearance and extensive European arena tours. Following the success of his recent work, Jarre has continued the Oxygène legacy through subsequent volumes, maintaining a minimalist approach inspired by the original recording process.
