Jean-Paul Rappeneau, director of Cyrano de Bergerac, dies at 94
French film director and screenwriter Jean-Paul Rappeneau has died in Paris at the age of 94. His death was confirmed by his family to the AFP.
Over a career spanning five decades, Rappeneau directed eight feature films, leaving a significant mark on French cinema despite his relatively small filmography. He was a self-taught filmmaker known for his perfectionism and a unique style that blended adventure, comedy, and fast-paced rhythm, influenced by both French theatrical traditions and American screwball comedies.
His most celebrated work was the 1990 adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s “Cyrano de Bergerac,” starring Gérard Depardieu. The film was an international success, earning ten César Awards, including Best Film and Best Director, and received five Oscar nominations. Other notable works include “La vie de château” (1966), featuring Catherine Deneuve, and the historical epic “Le Hussard sur le toit” (1995).
Throughout his career, Rappeneau collaborated with many of France’s most iconic actors, including Jean-Paul Belmondo, Yves Montand, and Isabelle Adjani. He began his career as a screenwriter, working on projects such as Louis Malle’s “Zazie dans le métro.”
