Jean-Philippe Louis releases debut novel set in Guadeloupe

Guadeloupean writer Jean-Philippe Louis has released his debut novel, ‘Les Fils du kapokier’, published by Gallimard. The story follows the lives of two friends, Anicet and Calixte, growing up in a small valley in Guadeloupe.

The narrative explores themes of adolescent friendship, family secrets, and the desire for emancipation. Set against the backdrop of the kapokier tree—an emblem of Caribbean roots and local beliefs—the novel uses a musical prose style that blends French with Creole.

Beyond the personal story, the work serves as a social critique of contemporary Guadeloupean society. Louis examines the disintegration of family models and the collective blind spots within the community, positioning himself as a modern storyteller within the Caribbean oral tradition.
