Jean-Pierre Papin reflects on career-defining loss to Bulgaria

Former French footballer and 1991 Ballon d’Or winner Jean-Pierre Papin has reflected on the most significant regret of his career: France’s failure to qualify for the 1994 World Cup.

Speaking ahead of an upcoming documentary on his career, the 62-year-old described the match against Bulgaria on November 17, 1993, at the Parc des Princes as an “unbearable” moment that remains an “unclosed scar.” Despite an early goal by Eric Cantona, Bulgaria’s Emil Kostadinov scored twice, including a decisive strike in the 90th minute, to prevent France from qualifying for the tournament in the United States.

Papin noted that while he has been able to move past other professional setbacks, the memory of that specific loss continues to affect him decades later.
