Jeannette Jara criticizes Chilean government and sentence reductions

Former presidential candidate Jeannette Jara has expressed strong opposition to recent decrees from the Ministry of Justice that reduce prison sentences for individuals convicted of human rights violations during the dictatorship. Jara argued that Chile is not prepared for such measures, particularly as the whereabouts of hundreds of disappeared detainees remain unknown. She criticized the lack of accountability, noting that those convicted of crimes such as torture and kidnapping have not taken responsibility or apologized to victims' families.

Additionally, Jara criticized the administration of President José Antonio Kast, describing its leadership as “erratic” and claiming there is “much discourse and little public policy.” She cited rising fuel prices and security concerns as direct consequences of the current government. While criticizing domestic policy, Jara did praise Kast for his timely recognition of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s electoral victory in Brazil.
