Jecheon to pursue national correctional facility following majority public support
Jecheon City has announced it will officially proceed with efforts to host a national correctional facility following a public opinion poll that showed majority support. According to the results of a face-to-face survey involving 1,506 residents, 61.7% of respondents favored the project, while 38.3% opposed it.
Mayor Lee Sang-cheon stated that the support stems from expectations regarding regional economic revitalization, population influx, and infrastructure expansion through large-scale national projects. The Ministry of Justice has proposed a facility worth approximately 400 billion won to alleviate overcrowding in national correctional institutions.
To move forward, the city will accept applications from villages wishing to host the facility from the 8th to the 17th. Following a review process to select a candidate site, Jecheon plans to submit a formal application to the Ministry of Justice by October 12. A final location is expected to be determined by the Ministry in December.
