Jedwabne pogrom 85th anniversary marked by commemorations and right‑wing protests in Poland

Polish officials and Jewish leaders gathered in Jedwabne to mark the 85th anniversary of the 1941 pogrom in which at least 340 Jews were killed. Marshal of the Sejm Włodzimierz Czarzasty opened the ceremony warning against "distorting history," while Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich, together with priests and a pastor, led prayers and read the victims' names, calling for exhumation of the remains.

At the same time, a group of far‑right supporters led by Grzegorz Braun erected a cross and a plaque near the memorial, held a mass and displayed an exhibition denouncing the historical findings of the Institute of National Remembrance. Braun’s allies labelled former presidents and historians as "lie‑makers" and staged a protest that the rabbi described as opposed to prayer and characterized as "extreme atheism."
