Jeff Garlin discusses mental health crisis following ‘The Goldbergs’ exit

Comedian Jeff Garlin has revealed that he experienced a nervous breakdown and contemplated suicide following his 2021 departure from the ABC sitcom ‘The Goldbergs’. During an appearance on the ‘Where Everybody Knows Your Name’ podcast with host Ted Danson, Garlin described the period as a dark time that required emergency intervention.

Garlin was removed from the series following an internal investigation into allegations of misconduct and abusive behavior toward colleagues. He recounted calling his ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ co-star Susie Essman to deliver what he intended as a final message. Essman subsequently contacted Garlin’s ex-wife, Marla, and his girlfriend, Sari Tracht, who worked with a friend to monitor him while seeking a treatment facility.

Garlin, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2022, noted that the condition had gone undetected during his time on ‘The Goldbergs’. He stated that after completing a program in Cincinnati and engaging in ongoing therapy and boxing, he is now feeling creatively and personally fulfilled.
