Jeff Kaplan avoids Overwatch content to protect mental health
Former Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan has revealed that he maintains a strict distance from the game to protect his mental health. Kaplan, who was a prominent figure at Blizzard before leaving the company, stated that he has not played Overwatch since April 2021.
To ensure a healthy psychological separation from a project that was once a central part of his identity, Kaplan actively avoids all related content. This includes avoiding official forums, subreddits, YouTube videos, and even searching for his own name in connection with the franchise. He noted that he even instructs platform algorithms to stop recommending Overwatch content to him.
Kaplan described this approach as an ‘almost clinical separation.’ Since leaving Blizzard, he has founded the independent studio Kintsugiyama and is currently working on a new title, The Legend of California.
