Jeff Nichols reveals several film projects have been shelved

Filmmaker Jeff Nichols has revealed that several of his highly anticipated projects are no longer moving forward. Among the shelved films is a planned adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novels “The Passenger” and “Stella Maris,” which Nichols intended to combine into a single feature. Nichols noted that New Regency decided not to proceed with the project, suggesting the screenplay was perhaps too faithful to the source material and lacked the commercial appeal the studio sought.

Additionally, the Cuban Revolution-themed project “Yankee Comandante,” which was set to star Adam Driver, has been halted. Nichols attributed the project's difficulties to the timing of the 2020 pandemic. While the collaboration with Driver on this specific film is off, the director confirmed they are working together on a different project.

In contrast to these setbacks, Nichols has completed “King Snake,” an original film starring Margaret Qualley and Drew Starkey, which was recently acquired by Neon. The project reportedly features more overt horror elements than his previous works.
