Jefferson County approves Clancy fire fee increase

Jefferson County commissioners have approved a fee increase for the Clancy Volunteer Fire Department to fund a building expansion and seek project financing. The decision follows nearly a year of public hearings and community outreach.

Under the new plan, the monthly fire service fee will increase by $10 per household, raising the annual cost from $145 to $265. Department leaders stated the increase is necessary because their budget has not kept pace with inflation regarding the cost of new trucks and equipment.

While Chief Kevin Harris expressed gratitude for the support of trustees and the public, some residents voiced opposition. Critics questioned the specific benefits of the expansion and whether the funds would adequately address needs such as wildland fires or structure fire equipment. Commissioner Cory Kirsch noted that unlike other agencies, the department's revenue remains flat regardless of growth or evaluations, requiring periodic adjustments to meet the cost of doing business.
