Jeffrey Archer, bestselling novelist and politician, dies at 86

British novelist and former Conservative Party politician Jeffrey Archer has died at his London home at the age of 86. His publisher, HarperCollins, reported that he passed away suddenly and peacefully on October 5, 2026, just one day before the scheduled worldwide release of his final novel, ‘Adam and Eve’.

Archer was a prolific and commercially successful author, having sold an estimated 300 million books in over 100 countries and 49 languages. His most famous works include ‘Kane and Abel’ and the ‘Clifton Chronicles’. He was notably the only author to reach number one on the Sunday Times bestseller list in fiction, short stories, and non-fiction.

His public life was marked by significant political involvement and high-profile controversy. He served as a Member of Parliament and as Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party during Margaret Thatcher’s premiership. However, his career was also defined by a conviction for perjury and fraud, for which he served time in prison following a scandal in the early 2000s. Queen Camilla praised him as an ‘irrepressible’ figure and a master storyteller.
