Jeffrey Dean Morgan reflects on career setbacks and Hollywood breakthroughs
Actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan has shared several reflections on his career during an appearance on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast. He revealed that in his mid-30s, his longtime manager terminated their professional relationship, claiming he had ‘aged out’ of the industry and had missed his window for success. At the time, Morgan was performing manual labor, such as building fences, to make ends meet.
Shortly after this setback, Morgan experienced a rapid career breakthrough, securing roles in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘Supernatural’, and ‘Weeds’ within a single week. He later achieved global fame for his role as Negan in ‘The Walking Dead’. He noted that he still occasionally faces hostility from fans in public due to his character's actions in the series.
Morgan also discussed his near-misses in major productions, including being in talks to play the DC character Lobo, a project that stalled due to script issues and studio caution. Additionally, he revealed that he once considered leaving ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ due to frustrations with his character's direction, but ultimately stayed after discussions with AMC executives regarding the character's evolution.
