Jeffrey Donaldson conviction sparks DUP crisis and independent review

Former Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson was found guilty of 18 sexual offences, including one count of rape, against two women when they were children. A jury at Newry Crown Court delivered a unanimous verdict and Donaldson will be sentenced in September.

Stormont Communities Minister Gordon Lyons said the party had "no inkling" of Donaldson's conduct and denied any prior complaints. DUP leader Gavin Robinson described the verdict as a shock and announced a "specialised and detailed independent review" into the issues raised. Former DUP adviser David Graham warned the party could be "damaged beyond repair" and that public trust has deteriorated.

BBC Spotlight’s upcoming investigation will examine allegations that Donaldson entered a London gay sauna in 2006 and that senior police officers observed the visit. Former DUP MP Ian Paisley disclosed that a woman had approached him years ago claiming exploitation by Donaldson, though she did not file a formal complaint. The party maintains it had no knowledge of any inappropriate behaviour and received no complaints.

The scandal has prompted calls from opposition figures, including SDLP leader Matthew O’Toole, for answers and a thorough examination of how the DUP handled the allegations.
