Jeffrey Donaldson faces sentencing after sex crime convictions

During a pre-sentence hearing at Newry Crown Court, lawyers argued that the convictions of former Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader Jeffrey Donaldson “obliterate” his political achievements. Donaldson, 63, was convicted in June of 18 sexual offences, including one count of rape, involving two women who were victims when they were of primary school age. The offences occurred between 1985 and 2008.

Prosecution barrister Rosemary Walsh KC highlighted aggravating factors, including the age disparity between Donaldson and his victims and the long-term impact of the abuse. The two victims attended the hearing in the public gallery to hear final submissions.

Donaldson, the former Lagan Valley MP, has been held at Maghaberry prison while awaiting sentencing. His wife, Eleanor Donaldson, was found to have aided and abetted his crimes following a trial of the facts; she is currently appealing that finding. Judge Paul Ramsey is scheduled to deliver the sentence next month.
