Jeffrey Donaldson renounces knighthood and Privy Council membership after child sex abuse convictions

Former Democratic Unionist Party leader Jeffrey Donaldson was found guilty by a jury at Newry Crown Court of 18 child sexual‑offence counts, including rape, indecent assault and gross indecency committed between 1985 and 2008. Following the verdict, Donaldson’s solicitor confirmed that he had signed letters to the UK Cabinet Office requesting the forfeiture of his 2016 knighthood and to the Privy Council Office tendering his immediate resignation from the lifetime appointment.

Current DUP leader Gavin Robinson and Ulster Unionist leader Jon Burrows publicly called for Donaldson’s honours to be removed. The Honours Forfeiture Committee must recommend withdrawal and the Sovereign must approve any cancellation, while resignation is the mechanism for leaving the Privy Council.
