Jeffrey Donaldson sentenced to 15 years for historical sexual offences

Jeffrey Donaldson, the former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for historical sexual offences against two women. The sentencing was delivered by Judge Paul Ramsey at Newry Crown Court.

Donaldson was convicted in June of 18 offences committed between 1985 and 2008, including one count of rape, 13 counts of indecent assault, and four counts of gross indecency. The judge described the crimes as a 'catastrophic descent into disgrace' and noted Donaldson's lack of remorse. Due to legal remissions, Donaldson is expected to serve seven and a half years in prison followed by a period on licence.

Donaldson's wife, Eleanor Donaldson, was also found to have aided and abetted his offences. However, she was deemed unfit to stand trial due to mental health concerns and faced a trial of the facts.

The DUP has condemned the crimes, stating that Donaldson 'deserves every day' of his sentence. Donaldson has denied all charges and is currently seeking to appeal his convictions.
